Corona’s Environmental Effect

Friday 27th March 2020.

One of the more noticeably positive things to come out of the COVID-19 Pandemic has been the visible decline in NO² (Nitrogen dioxide) emission levels in China and Italy.

Italy’s industrial hub accounts for nearly 24% of their GDP and China’s accounts for more than 40% of theirs. With the closure of factories and much of the workforce working from home, there has been a massive decline in productivity and pollution.

You have probably seen some of the satellite images on the media, showing parts of China and Italy, before and after the COVID-19 Pandemic. With many of China’s factories now back into manufacturing mode, will the NO² emissions return to their pre-COVID-19 levels?

UPDATE: The Centre for Research on Energy and Clean Air has confirmed that China’s NO² pollution levels are now back to their normal range.
